Ngā Manu Arataki – The Guiding Birds
Ngā Manu Arataki symbolises guidance and leadership, like manu flying together across the sky. Each bird moves in harmony with those beside it, carried by the strength of the flock while finding its own direction in the wind. It reminds us that true leadership is not about standing alone, but about lifting others as we journey together.
This taonga speaks to whakapapa and unity. Each generation is guided by those who came before, while creating new pathways for those who will come after. It is a reflection of collective strength, vision, and the courage to lead with both heart and humility.
Artist's Note
Created by Caleb Kutia of Tekotiri Ltd, Tai Aroha was carved as part of the Te Haerenga (The Journey) collection for Art in the Park 2025. The flowing kōwhaiwhai forms represent the heartbeat of aroha, waves of emotion and movement that mirror the tides of Tangaroa.
This piece is a reminder that love, in all its forms, has the power to restore balance, to carry us forward when we feel adrift, and to return us home to ourselves and to each other.

At Tekotiri, each taonga carries its own mauri, reminding us that every journey is unique. More than rākau, they are pathways of connection, guiding whānau back to their whakapapa and forward into their own journey.
