What is the Kōkako?
The kōkako is a native bird of Aotearoa, known for its rich, echoing call that travels through the ngahere. It moves with intention, often leaping from branch to branch, showing strength through patience and control.
Significance for Tuakana
The Tuakana represents guidance and influence. Like the kōkako supporting its partner, this taonga symbolises leadership through connection. It teaches that strength is not held alone, but shared, and that our presence can uplift and direct those around us.
What is a koikoi?
Traditionally, the koikoi was a long spear sharpened on both ends, used with a two-handed grip to strike and parry.
At Tekotiri, each taonga carries its own mauri, reminding us that every journey is unique. More than rākau, they are pathways of connection, guiding whānau back to their whakapapa and forward into their own journey.
