What is the Kōkako?
The kōkako is a native bird of Aotearoa, known for its rich, echoing call that travels through the ngahere. It moves with intention, often leaping from branch to branch, showing strength through patience and control.
Significance for Pōtiki
The Pōtiki represents the first expression of self. Like the kōkako beginning its call in the stillness of the forest, this taonga reflects early confidence, curiosity, and the courage to be seen.
What is a koikoi?
Traditionally, the koikoi was a long spear sharpened on both ends, used with a two-handed grip to strike and parry.
At Tekotiri, each taonga carries its own mauri, reminding us that every journey is unique. More than rākau, they are pathways of connection, guiding whānau back to their whakapapa and forward into their own journey.
