Ngākau Tūhono – Hearts Connected
Ngākau Tūhono speaks to the invisible threads that bind us. Between partners, parents and children, and the generations that walk before and after us. It reminds us that true strength is found in unity, compassion, and aroha. In the way hearts connect, even when distance, time, or hardship lie between them.
This taonga embodies the essence of whakapapa and relationship, a reminder that we are never alone in our journey. Every connection we nurture adds to the weaving of our shared story — one of love, resilience, and purpose.
Artist's Note
Created by Caleb Kutia of Tekotiri Ltd, Ngākau Tūhono was carved as part of the Te Haerenga (The Journey) collection for Art in the Park 2025. Each line and curve within the kōwhaiwhai represents the flow of love and connection that binds whānau together. A visual heartbeat linking past, present, and future.
The piece stands as a reflection of Caleb’s own kaupapa as a husband, father, and artist. Using whakairo as a language of aroha, service, and unity.

At Tekotiri, each taonga carries its own mauri, reminding us that every journey is unique. More than rākau, they are pathways of connection, guiding whānau back to their whakapapa and forward into their own journey.
